People living at Mentmore House in Ramsgate are celebrating the completion of a newly refurbished community garden thanks to Orbit South and Mitie. About 45 people, including local people from the community along with staff from the two organisations, volunteered their time over the last week to completely transform the garden. The garden was donated to the community as a thank you for letting the Orbit and Mitie use the local car park to store supplies while refurbishing over 250 kitchens and bathrooms to Orbit homes in the Thanet area.
To celebrate the completion of the works Orbit and Mitie held a celebration event for the community on Thursday 4 August. Everyone enjoyed a buffet and refreshments and even a little sunshine, while they admired their new garden. It is hoped that the new garden will become the hub of the local community!
The project was made possible due to donations of time, money and materials. Local residents helped with planting, Mitie contributed over £5,500 as part of their ongoing community investment commitment for Orbit communities and Orbit staff provided time and labour.
“Thank you so much to Orbit and Mitie for the work they have done and providing the raised beds and plants. It was something that we had been talking about, but didn’t think would happen so quickly,” says Jean Edwards, an Orbit South customer who lives at Mentmore House.
Steph Hawkes, Property Investment Co-ordinator for Orbit South says; “We’re really pleased with how the garden turned out. We’ve recently refurbished 250 kitchens and bathrooms in Thanet as part of our property investment programme and we couldn’t have done so without the help pf people living at Mentmore House. This project is a really great example of what can be accomplished when people work together to create something for their local neighbourhood. I hope everyone living here enjoys the garden for many years to come!”
Simon Church, Senior Partnership Manager for Housing at Mitie says: “We’re delighted to be part of this project, which has really transformed the garden into a wonderful and serene space. We believe in the benefits that investing in the local community brings to residents, and how projects like this can go a long way to enhance their living environments. A huge thanks to everyone that made this happen.”
