Time to reflect

Celebrating a birthday or anniversary often triggers a period of reflection over our achievements and journey to where we are now.

As Orbit Group approaches its 50th anniversary in 2017, we can reflect proudly over our history as a long-term sustainable business.

We are currently in a period of significant change. Our sector and customers are facing welfare reforms, a major housing shortage and reduction in community services so our social purpose is ever more evident to empower the 100,000 customers we serve.

This week we have published our first Corporate Responsibility (CR) Report, which outlines how we work with communities to make a sustainable difference to the environment, economy and society.

Orbit delivered a £45.5m profit in 2014-15. At a time when housing associations are coming under scrutiny to justify surpluses, the CR Report shows how these profits are being reinvested and sets out plans for our future.

As a values-based business we make a profit so we can deliver our mission of ‘Building Communities’. 2014 saw Orbit launch its ‘Profit for a Purpose’ culture. This was a step change for the organisation taking a more commercial approach to deliver more with our resources for our customers and communities.

With £1.8m invested in community schemes in the past 12 months, Orbit has supported customers to improve their digital skills, find employment and manage their money.

Through investment in energy efficiency and warmer homes, and supporting environmental projects, the report demonstrates how Orbit has supported the wellbeing of customers in the communities where they live.

Our partnerships and investment in third sector projects has enabled us to support new initiatives and grow existing successful schemes. These together have provided training and support to 1,530 customers.

In providing a choice of quality housing for any age, we have built more than 1,500 new homes for rent and sale last year. Through doing so, gave more people the opportunity to own their own homes and further expanded its independent living with care portfolio for over-55’s.

We will continue to build on our rich history as we progress to our 2020 Vision and celebrate our 50th anniversary. We are already looking forward to reporting back in 12 months from now on more of the successful work we have delivered to further our journey and those of our customers.
