A Bedfordshire independent living scheme is in the running for an accolade as a leading example of housing for an ageing population.
St Bede’s, which was created by Orbit Homes, has been shortlisted in the Development of the Year category of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) Midlands Awards 2014.
The development comprises 104 one and two bedroom luxury apartments for those aged 55 plus and is managed by Orbit Independent Living. Built on the Bromham Road site of the old St Bede’s school in Bedford, the scheme retains the façade of the school along with several other features of the original building.
Speaking of the award shortlisting, Lorraine Mansfield, Extra Care Development Manager at Orbit commented: “We are proud to have been shortlisted for this award as St Bede’s is a testament to our commitment of providing housing choice in the communities where we work. St Bede’s is the first scheme of its kind in the area, and from the ground up it has been designed to enable customers to live independently until later in life.”
St Bede’s is equipped to cater for a whole range of customers, from working age, right up to those who require specialised care in later life; the scheme incorporates a multitude of services ranging from a hairdressers to a gym.
Winners will be announced at an Awards Dinner on 23 October.
