Apni Haweli sheltered scheme statement

Recently we have had queries around prioritisation of housing at Apni Haweli, a scheme for people over 55, managed by Orbit South. Like other housing organisations across the country, we provide a range of housing which caters for people of specific backgrounds where there is a defined local need. We never exclude people based on race, and at this scheme five out of the 18 properties are currently allocated to people from white British backgrounds.

When it opened in 2002, this scheme was one of around 30 set up nationally as part of a Government-backed initiative to provide sheltered housing in areas with a significant elderly Black Minority Ethnic population. We regularly review housing need in Medway to ensure we are providing the right homes for the community, and will continue to do so in partnership with Medway Council.
