Fly tipping

What is fly tipping?

Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of waste and it is a criminal offence.

Illegally dumped waste causes health and safety risks and creates an eyesore for the local community. Fly tipping also means that clean up costs also end up being paid by taxpayers.

People and companies that carry out fly tipping can an on-the-spot fine for minor offences or fines up to £50,000 or a prison sentence for major offences.

Where we are contacted to remove waste from communal areas managed by Orbit, the costs for doing this will be added to the service charge for all residents.

How to report fly tipping

If you notice waste that has been dumped:

  • Do not move or disturb the waste material - there may be useful evidence in the waste or hazardous materials that need specialist handling.
  • Make a note of the location of the waste and the date and time you noticed it.

If you witness people illegally dumping the waste, and if it is safe to do so, take down details such as vehicle registrations, appearances of the people involved and the date and time - photos and video are ideal. Do not put yourself at risk to get this information.

You can report fly tipping to us using our handy reporting form below.
