Housing capping FAQs

When will this happen?

Although the new rules will apply to any new or renewed tenancy signed from April 2016 onwards, any changes to HB entitlement will not happen until April 2019. This means anyone taking a tenancy during this two year period will have their housing benefit entitlement assessed as now; and it may or may not alter then at this later date.

Will existing tenancies be affected?

Tenancies signed before April 2016 won’t be affected straightaway. However, if you are moved over onto universal credit, the amount of housing allowance you receive will be capped at the new rate. This may mean that you find yourself with a shortfall that needs to be made up.
