About this Project
At the Sova Orbit Mentoring Project we find, train and support volunteer mentors to work with local Orbit South customers and their families. Our mentors provide practical advice and emotional support, helping residents to make informed choices and improve their lives.
Our volunteer mentors work in the community providing one to one support, on a weekly basis, supporting those who have found themselves in difficult situations. Working alongside Orbit South and other agencies, our mentors help people reach their potential by building confidence and self-esteem. Mentors help to motivate residents to find ways to tackle problems, whether they are at risk of losing their tenancy, involved in anti-social behaviour or need help getting back to work and education.
All of our volunteers receive accredited training. The Sova Orbit Mentoring Project is funded by Orbit South.
Our volunteers do not need any professional work experience as full accredited training is provided. We ask that our volunteers are reliable, committed, understanding, patient and empathetic.
The client group we work with is diverse and need support in different areas, some of the support you will be providing could be:
- Offering advice and support
- Helping with budgets
- Liaising with other services
- Helping clients build the confidence they need to leave their home
- Helping clients with paperwork or setting up accounts
- Researching and signposting clients to other support services such as mental health services or housing services
- Attending appointments with clients
We ask that our volunteers are able to commit to the project for a minimum of 6 months and be available for mentoring between 2-4 hours a week.
