Orbit and Coventry University are working together on an exciting new research project to better understand household energy use.
The aim of this study is to consider how providing people with real-time, accurate information on their energy consumption can help them to manage their usage and perhaps save money on their bills. We will be trialling a brand new energy ‘dashboard’ and virtual world game with a small number of households across the Midlands.
Participants don’t need any specialist knowledge to take part, and they will be one of the first households to try out this ground-breaking technology.
As part of the trial sensors will be attached to electricity and gas meters to measure consumption, other sensors will monitor temperature, carbon dioxide and humidity inside the home. A tablet will be provided on which participants can view a ‘dashboard’ of the information being collected. After about 6 months we will provide participants with a virtual energy game which will be influenced by real life behaviours. We will undertake two interviews with participants to find out about their energy use and their experience with the technology. Other energy-related challenges will also be taking place, such as taking photos of energy saving or wasting appliances.
Participants will be compensated for their time with £70 in Love2Shop or supermarket vouchers. There will also be the opportunity to earn a further £30 in vouchers through taking part in the energy-related challenges. Participants will also be able to keep the tablet once the trial is over.
Joining the project will have no link to the customers tenancy or to the companies that supply gas, electricity or water. This process should help to identify practical ways to manage or reduce energy bills and make the indoor environment healthier or more comfortable.

The pilot areas for this project is Coventry, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and Worcestershire. If you live in one of these areas and would like to take part click the link below:Register your interest
Registering your interest does not mean you have to take part, and if you change your mind you can withdraw at any point.
Please note unfortunately households with Pre Payment meters are unable to take part in this project.
You will be invited to an optional casual information event to find out more information, meet the research team and see some of the technology that will be installed in your home if you sign up. Or if you’d prefer, you can have a telephone conversation with one of our team.
We look forward to meeting you!
