Erith park residents sow the seeds of community with new allotment

A residents group at Erith Park in the London Borough of Bexley is living the good life thanks to a team of employees from affordable housing contractor, Wates Living Space who turned out in force to create a new community allotment on Friday 22nd May.

The Wates Living Space team downed tools on the nearby Erith Park construction site to help the community transform overgrown land at the allotment, clearing weeds and erecting a new shed with decking. A starter kit of garden tools was also provided to ensure that residents can continue to cultivate the land, with the first plants due in the ground soon.

The project was initiated by Erith Park’s jointly funded community engagement officer for Orbit and Wates Living Space, Francois Jensen. Francois encouraged a group of local residents to pursue their green-fingered aspirations and sign up for a shared allotment.  This project formed part of Wates’ annual Community Day, which sees 2,000 employees nationwide donate a day of their time to make a tangible difference to the communities in which they are working. This year, local projects across the UK received over 4,700 hours of Wates’ time.

Lawrence Baxter, Construction Manager at Wates Living Space, commented: “This was an excellent way to bring together the local community and unite them under a common cause. As a business, Wates Living Space is committed to leaving a lasting legacy in the communities where we work and our annual community day is a great way to do this. We had a great time working with the residents of Erith Park. I hope they will soon start to enjoy the fruits of their labour and continue to do so for many years to come.”

Francois Jesen, Community Engagement Officer at Erith Park, commented: “The allotment is a great way to nurture strong community ties at Erith Park. Volunteers will get the opportunity to meet new people and support each other throughout the year, working together to cultivate a thriving plot. We hope that, as new residents move into Erith Park, the number of volunteers will continue to grow.”

Wates Living Space is currently working in partnership with Orbit South on the £120m development of Erith Park. One of the largest regeneration projects in London, once completed, all seven tower blocks on the former Larner Road estate will be replaced with over 550 low rise homes.
