Bedford over 55’s scheme, St Bede’s, has been named winner of the Residential category at the East Midlands Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards 2015.
The extra care scheme, which was developed by Orbit Homes and designed by PRP Architects, provides specialist housing to enable residents to remain independent in later life. Through the implementation of specialist design, assisted technology, onsite care and a wealth of communal facilities, St Bede’s creates a unique and balanced environment for residents to grow old in comfort, knowing that appropriate support is on hand as and when required.
The award comes just over a week after the scheme was also named Housing Project of the Year at the Building Awards 2015. The national awards recognise only the best projects within the sector and St Bede’s fought off tough competition from private sector developers for the accolade.
Speaking of the wins, Lorraine Mansfield, Extra Care Development Manager at Orbit, commented: “We are absolutely delighted to have picked up these two prestigious awards, which are very highly regarded within the sector.
“When creating St Bede’s, it was imperative to us that we listened to, and acted on, the feedback of our existing customers and the local community. Clearly this approach has paid off, as the scheme is now not only being looked at as a fantastic example of extra care within the UK, but also across Europe.”
“Providing a range of suitable housing options for our country’s population is of great importance to us, and with the ageing population, we are incredibly proud that St Bede’s is recognised as leading the way.”
St Bede’s was completed in 2014, with Orbit Independent Living taking responsibility for the scheme’s on-going management. The scheme comprises 104 luxury apartments alongside a multitude of communal facilities including a hairdressers, gym, shop, restaurant and games room.
