Orbit’s Bedford extra care scheme, St Bede’s, has been shortlisted for two national awards.
The over 55’s scheme, which was developed by Orbit Homes and is managed by Orbit Independent Living, has been shortlisted in the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) East of England Awards in the Residential category as well as the UK Housing Awards for outstanding development of the year (25 homes or more).
The extra care development comprises 104 one and two bedroom luxury apartments for those aged 55 plus and is built on the site of the former St Bede’s school on Bromham Road in Bedford; the scheme retains the façade of the school along with several other features of the original building.
Lorraine Mansfield, extra care development manager at Orbit, commented: “St Bede’s really is a fantastic example of extra care living. It’s great to see the scheme shortlisted for two huge awards which are so highly regarded within the sector.
“Not only does this reflect the efforts that Orbit and our partners have put into delivering these homes, but it also gives our customers and the local community peace of mind that what we have created here is a high-quality independent living scheme.”
St Bede’s is designed to enable its residents to remain independent for as long as possible. Facilities cater for a whole range of customers, from working age to those who require specialist care in later life. The multitude of communal facilities within the scheme includes a hairdressers, gym, shop, restaurant and games room.
Last year, the scheme was also awarded Development of the Year in the Chartered Institute of Housing Awards 2014.
The UK Housing Awards winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 21 April, whilst RICS East of England Awards winners will be announced in Bury St Edmunds on 6 May.
