Supplying to us

Like most large organisations Orbit has developed and relies upon strong relationships with various partner organisations. Our Procurement Team works tirelessly to ensure we get the best possible service for the best possible price.

So far as we are concerned effective procurement is: the acquisition of works, services and goods, which meet our residents',  service users' and the organisation’s needs, ensuring value for money throughout the life of the product (including disposal) and wherever possible delivering additional social value as a matter of course.

At the same time we understand the value of good relationships with ethical suppliers who deliver excellent service at an acceptable price.  We want to work with the best.

It is about the purchase of all goods, services and works needed to enable Orbit to deliver services to our residents.  This can be anything from pens and paper to major construction projects, therefore how we procure these services this can vary.

This website has been designed to give you (suppliers, contractors, consultants, service providers, etc.) the information you need to be able to trade more easily with the Orbit Group. The portal is shared with other registered providers of social housing, increasing suppliers’ access to opportunities on a single registration – just be sure to select ‘all organisations’ when you register.

  • Self register as prospective supplier
  • Maintain your own profile information
  • Obtain (download) tender documents electronically
  • Upload tender submissions electronically
  • View current and future tendering opportunities
  • View details of awarded contracts

Community Investment

We believe community investment is key to supporting our customers and their communities.   

Our approach to investment aims to achieve the following objectives through our Better Days Programme of offers, opportunities and services:

  • Social – We support communities to become safe and inviting places to live, with activities and amenities that engage everyone. Communities can generate ideas to improve their neighbourhoods through digital and social networks and volunteering.
  • Economic – We work with individuals and the wider community to encourage enterprise, ambition, skills and employment opportunities.
  • Environmental – We promote a better quality of life through our investment in the quality of our homes. We provide homes that are affordable to heat and can be changed as our customers’ needs change throughout their lives.

Our priorities for investing in the community are around four themes:

  • money
  • employment, skills and enterprise
  • well-being
  • digital services

Our ambition is to invest £30 million into our communities by 2020. This includes direct investment and investment through external partners and funding streams.

Community Investment programmes

We offer a number of programmes to allow our customers to live more independently and improve their lives and the life of their families. Two of these are:

Apprenticeship programme 

We fund apprenticeships within our organisation to help customers and their family members find work.

We have funded more than 40 placements to date in our various teams and services. These have proved life-changing opportunities for young people at the beginning of their working lives and for those who have struggled to return to work in later life.

We are proud of our track record. A significant number of our apprentices have moved into full-time roles as a result of their placement. This achievement has been recognised by the National Apprenticeship Service, with Orbit East and Orbit South each winning a regional award for their work.

Community investment research and good practice 

Understanding the needs of communities and demonstrating impact are vital to how we plan and manage our community investment strategy.

Community Investment digital inclusion

Orbit is committed to helping our customers and communities get the most out of being online. We also know that addressing the complex issues which come under the ‘digital inclusion’ agenda cannot be addressed by working in isolation. Orbit has published the report ‘Access all areas’ (2013) which provides data and analysis about internet access uptake and barriers to getting online faced by Orbit’s customers.

Digital inclusion is about going beyond providing the ‘boxes and wires’ to enable access the internet.

  • It is about helping people to get online and to build the skills and confidence to make the most of the opportunities it offers.
  • It is about helping people to understand how they can use online services to remove or limit the issues that affect them and take advantage of new opportunities available through online routes.
  • It is about making sure that online services are designed to be inclusive - of how people want and need to use them, of the devices and connection speeds that people will have available and of the rich environment of other sources of support and advice that are available online.

Working in partnership

We are keen to find opportunities to work with our business partners and to collaborate with charities and other community organisations who understand the issues our communities face. We also know that many organisations are already delivering digital access and skills support on the ground. How Orbit is helping

Orbit’s internet access and digital skills programme includes:

  • improving provision of shared Wi-Fi in our sheltered and supported schemes
  • building networks of community-based volunteers (Digital Champions) who can help engage and support others to develop their digital skills and confidence
  • developing engagement and support materials that link in with topics and issues that matter to people who are not already online (and may not currently be interested in going online)
  • exploring digital access and skills issues further to make sure we understand and plan to address the real challenges and opportunities.

Orbit is also a founding partner of the Digital Champions Network for Housing (DCN4H).

Delivering social value

In addition to the requirements for including social value in procurement through the Social Value Act (2012), we fundamentally believe in delivering social value.  This is not an add on.  Our supply chain is instrumental in the delivery of our services, but also have unique positions within our delivery chain to really add value to our community programmes. With two publications on how to do this, as well as running seminars to both public services and providers Orbit is a leader in this field.

We believe in making this tangible and meaningful for suppliers as well as our customers.  Too often it is wrapped up in jargon. Information in this area should help describe what we mean, help you think through what you could provide and highlight good practice and those in our supply chain already doing a lot.
